Is my page indexed by Google

On Friday 25th July 2008 while doing some research for a client I came across information relating to knoll, a news aggregation site that had been launched by Google on the Wednesday before.

I read with interest how this was Google’s answer to Wikipedia, logic tells you that if Google are looking to break into left hand page listings then this would be a way to go. Then when you see the domain for this site actually sits inside Google, http://knol.google.com it’s apparent that since it is part of the most popular site in the world then it’s going to gather strength from this and content will fly.

I made the decision to visit on the Saturday and add some content to see how if it gathers speedy levitation.

You can tell if your page is indexed by Google by:

• Doing a search for the page title you have given it, like this is called “Is my page indexed by Google”. If we search for it and it appears on one of the pages it is listed. If you have got to page 3 and not seen it yet you can add words like, in our case “Berkshire”, as this will reduce the number of possible options and make it easier for our page to come forward.

• The second option is speedier. You type in site:http://www.yourdomainname/thepagename This will tell you if the page is in the search engine.

Because I had been led to believe that knol was like wiki in that you create a page and others can add to it, I did a search for email marketing and it delivered nothing! So the next day, Saturday 26th July 2008 I decided that my first article was going to be about “Email Marketing” and so I would write a few paragraphs. Ali pointed out that we had a ton of content already on email marketing and why not use that? So I took the thirteen articles and turned them into one article, over 5000 words long! This took a few hours to aggregate and polish and then I published my email marketing article, figuring I would be top of the pops.

I went to search for my article and it didn’t show but two others did!!! Ten minutes or so the page did show demonstrating the rapid index nature of the site, it being Google. But how come others had added stories before me and mine was allowed to be added? Therefore it’s not like wiki because the idea of that is that there is one page that everyone adds to. It’s more like a news aggregation site as everyone can add what they like... not sure what Google are doing with this, it will be interesting to watch its evolution.

It could well be the first step in devolution as Google tries to eat more of the cake and explodes into tiny pieces!

I then added a single story to see how quick it was to add a new story... took all of 45 seconds. I will be using it again and may well even publish this article on knol and see how it performs against our other sites.

Keep an eye on www.businessinberkshire.co.uk/knol for more news as it happens...
