SEO: Is it today's Snake Oil? |
|
I’m one of those folk who earns a few quid offering SEO services. I do qualify our service with there are no guarantees but we do tend to get some great lift off for clients.
I also explain that although our system is very powerful it does need feeding and that food comes in the form of words. We can manage word creation, we can put them in touch with a copy writer or they can get a student to do it. The purpose of writing this article is in response to a chap’s article on LinkedIn. I’ll not mention the chaps name or the source of the article because that would give him some free publicity and he didn’t come searching for it. He simply wrote on his 200 page blog a page entitled “SEO: Is it today's Snake Oil?” He slates SEO chaps as experts looking for a fast book who make promises they can’t keep and offer solutions they can’t prove. He is a young chap who fancies himself as an expert in what’s next in the media and mentions blumin Twitter in his about us section. GIVE ME A BREAK... now that’s the pot calling the kettle if every I’ve heard it. Social media is cool but we’re essentially talking about “night clubs” of old where some folk hang out and chat. Most people are not “in the house” they are tucked up with a cup of cocoa! Real business is done by real people in real time, face to face. There are exceptions and some folk make a fortune offering material online and in brown envelopes but most real business happens when real people connect. I decided to add this comment on one of our websites www.firstpageseo.co.uk as it is a relevant place to post. I will then follow up by adding this content to LinkedIn and if people should choose to search the title of this story after reading it they could well find our page flying high, probably under a Business in Berkshire url as this is the foundations to our own SEO excellence. This will then under-line our ability to achieve quality SEO... and, by the way, we do so at very reasonable prices! As for SEO being today’s Snake Oil... in every single industry you get a breed of top salesmen and women who understand how to manipulate situations to their advantage and charge thousands for what amounts to be hot air. They are not unique to SEO, they are just part of the human race and one day they will get bitten by their own greed. Most business men and women, especially small business men and women, are simply out to make an honest buck, pound, yen or euro by providing people with a service they like to think they are pretty good at. One thing I was taught in the good old days, when I was a trainee sales rep, was never to slate the competition as it reflects on you. It makes you feel rubbish and sound like your jealous, therefore a negative personality. Perhaps they could also help you one day? So think on if you are going to post negative material on your blog... could well count against you in more ways than one. I, for one, work with others in the online space because to me Twitter is noise pollution and I guess there is more of the same on the way. I’d rather someone else was an expert in that field so I could call on when I have a client who is interested... as the customer is always right! Slightly longer than planned, almost a double page spread!! P.S. If you live near Windsor UK and are doing very little on the 5th June 2009, get your butt along to our Online Marketing Magic event. P.P.S. If you are reading this after the 5th June, don't worry, there will be another event coming soon!! |
